Serrano and Cahuilla Cultural Presentations
Last week Native American hip hop artist, Tha Native, did two presentations on his native Serrano and Cahuilla culture here in the Inland Empire.
The first was at the Redlands Area Historical Society and later in the week was at Soar Charter Academy; a middle school in the city of San Bernardino.
One of the topics of his presentation in Redlands was discussing the traditional roles and titles that his tribe used. For example, you can see in the image that his people used a native word that translates into captain. He then explained that while other tribes in other areas may have used the word chief, his tribe used captain.
Later he discussed the topic of Keeping Culture Alive. He gave a number of examples how his people at the San Manuel reservation are actively doing this, like through children’s camps and language courses. He explained that at one time there were tens of thousands of speakers of his Serrano language, but at this time there are only two people who are truly fluent at it.
Here you can see some of the items that Tha Native brings with him to the presentations that he gives. These items help the attendees better understand what he’s talking about, especially if they are unfamiliar with the items to begin with.
